Homewood dealership gifts car to mother of baby with medical complications: 'Believe in miracles'

HOMEWOOD, Ill. (WLS) -- How would a new car change your life? That was the question posed by a local car dealership for its annual car giveaway contest.

In a tradition that has been going for over a decade, Chevrolet of Homewood gave away one free car on Christmas Eve to someone deserving in the community.

It was a holiday surprise unlike any other. Behind the tears was a woman who's battled a lot this year.

Lameisha Moon's son Jahmyr was born in April with multiple medical complications.

Without a vehicle, she's had to make the difficult, near-daily trip to the hospital for different doctor appointments, carrying his oxygen tank, heart monitor and feeding tub, all on the bus.

"They read my story, and know that I don't want sympathy, because people always feel bad," Moon said. "I just wanted a chance for my child."

Steve Filippos and his team were moved by her perseverance in the face of unimaginable obstacles, and from the 500 applicants, they chose her as this year's winner of Chevy of Homewood's car giveaway.

"This young lady in her letter she asked for one thing she said she doesn't want charity. She wants a chance," Filippos said. "And what we want to do is we want to give her a chance to change the rest of her life. Sometimes just that one foot up is what you need to get you to where you have to be."

Moon went home Wednesday with a red hot 2026 Chevrolet Trax.

"Words can't describe," Moon said. "I know it's a giveaway to some people, but for me my child, it's more than even a blessing."

Giving the gift to someone who genuinely needs it, and simply lending a helping hand during a pivotal moment in her life, the owner of Chevrolet of Homewood says this could not have gone to someone more deserving.

"To see someone carrying so much and having to be so stoic and militant, it's a lot," her cousin Samiyah Moon said. "I want her to be able to have a break and have a breath of fresh air. I feel like that this is that for her."

Chevy is also paying for her first three months of car insurance. The owner says with a little luck, they hope to be able to do the contest every year.

"Just have faith, keep going, don't give up and believe in miracles," Lameisha Moon said.
