Gurnee police responded just before 4 a.m. to a business in the 400-block of Riverside Drive, after multiple burglar alarms went off.
When police arrived, they saw the front windows of several businesses were shattered.
Police said they later learned this was a coordinated effort affecting multiple locations.
Fifteen businesses across Gurnee were broken into.
Cash registers were taken from some stores, but others reported no obvious items missing.

The total amount of cash stolen remains under investigation, police said.
Police said several suspects wearing masks and gloves were involved.
Surveillance footage shows them breaking the front windows of the businesses, police said.
No one was left on the scene when police arrived.
