COOK COUNTY, Ill. (WLS) -- A 21-year-old Lansing man has been accused of stealing an ambulance from a north suburban Portillo's parking lot with a worker still in it Tuesday afternoon, Niles police said.

Domanick J. Barr was charged with aggravated possession of a stolen motor vehicle, police said.

Barr got into the ambulance, which was running with a worker inside at the Portillo's in the 8800-block of West Dempster Street in Niles just before 4 p.m., and drove away, police said.

The worker was able to call 911 from the back of the vehicle.

Illinois State Police and other local police agencies were able to stop the vehicle on southbound Interstate 294 at Ogden Avenue.

Barr was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, police said.

The ambulance worker was not harmed.

Chopper 7 followed the ambulance down I-294, as it swerved in and out of traffic.

Police later surrounded the vehicle, broke the window and dragged Barr out and onto the highway.

Niles police are investigating.
