CHICAGO (WLS) -- An apartment fire claimed the life of a man on the city's Southwest Side on Thursday morning.

The fire happened at about 4:07 a.m. on Francisco Avenue and 45th Street in Brighton Park, according to Chicago police.

A man, believed to be in his 60s, was found unresponsive inside and apartment as the building was on fire. He was taken to Mt. Sinai Hospital where he later died.

"I heard the sirens of the firetrucks and my dog barking. I woke up to see people coming out of the building and hearing the commotion of the fire department going in," witness Orlando Zapata said.

The building's basement was flooded after the response from fireghters.

"I woke up and I saw the smoke and I called the police. That's it," resident Samuel Garcia, who is now displaced said.

Four people are now displaced after the fire destroyed their homes.

Garcia now forced to bag up what salvageable belongings he had and venture out into the frigid temperatures without a permanent home ahead of the holidays.

The Chicago Fire Department passed out smoke detectors and fire safety materials to neighbors after the deadly fire.

No other injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

This comes as Chicago is facing sub-zero wind chills overnight.
