CHICAGO (WLS) -- A Republican congressman has subpoenaed the new Chicago Public Schools CEO.

He wants Macquline King to testify before the Education and Workforce Committee.

Chairman Tim Walberg of Michigan says King has refused previous requests from the committee to testify, citing "scheduling conflicts."

The committee is examining parental rights in K through 12 schools and the use of federal funds.

CPS did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The district is facing an almost $1 billion deficit.

CPS student enrollment has dropped by 45,000 students during the past seven years.

CPS also has aging buildings and a growing population of students with special needs.
