A man was shot to death in the northwest suburbs on Sunday, according to police.
Multiple people are in custody; however, police have not released any details on a nearly 10-hour lockdown of the neighborhood as residents told ABC7 they were asked to shelter in place following the shooting.
The shooting happened around 2:20 a.m. in the 300-block of Cedar Circle in Streamwood, police said. A 24-year-old man from Elgin was shot. He was taken to the hospital where he later died.
It was nearly 1 p.m. Sunday afternoon when a SWAT team could be seen finally making entry into a Streamwood home, which for hours had been surrounded by officers. Whether they believed someone was barricaded inside or were just acting out of an over abundance of caution is not clear.
Following an extensive, nearly hour-long search, SWAT left empty-handed. The neighborhood was cleared of the massive police presence that flooded the area following the deadly shooting during the overnight hours.
"Around 2 to 2:15 in the morning, I heard it sounded like firecrackers," resident Ed Udelle said.
Neighbors said the gunshots were fired on the street after a fight broke out involving several people who had been at a children's birthday party at the house in question. Streamwood police have only said that a 24-year-old man was killed at the location, but they are not providing any information regarding the circumstances.
"I was woken up to the lights flashing into our bedroom," resident Michael Kuecker said. "And when I looked out the window, there were all of these squad cars and everything blocked off, and I could hear on the loudspeaker them saying, 'people at the residence, please come out with your hands up.'"
While those who live closest to where the shooting happened did not feel comfortable speaking to ABC7 camera Sunday, multiple residents said they saw partygoers come out in drips and drabs throughout the morning, with police first searching them before letting them go. Other said they were placed into squad cars and driven away.
"I've lived here for over 30 years, and this is the first time anything like this has ever happened in this neighborhood," Kuecker said.
Police said this was an isolated event and there was no threat to the public. Nobody has been identified.
