PROSPECT HEIGHTS, Ill. (WLS) -- A 35-year-old man was struck and killed by two cars in Prospect Heights Tuesday night, police said.

Officers responded to the incident at about 8:15 p.m. at Elmhurst Road, just north of Robert Avenue.

Police said a 35-year-old man was fatally struck by an SUV traveling south on Elmhurst Road, and a second vehicle traveling north on Elmhurst Road subsequently hit the man.

Both drivers are cooperating with police and neither was issued a citation.

Their toxicology tests were also negative.

Police said lighting conditions and the dark clothing worn by the victim were factors in the crash.

The road in the area was closed for six hours as police investigated.

Debris in the street and police tape near the scene remained Wednesday.

Scott Fitzgerald lives nearby, and said his wife told him what happened.

"She heard screeching tires around 8:10, 8:15. She walked out and saw a pair of shoes in the middle of the street," Fitzgerald said.

A walking path crosses that part of Elmhurst Road, which, neighbors say, gets dark at night.

They said there's not enough lighting or sidewalks.

"You take your life into your hands when you ty to cross this busy street," Fitzgerald said. "This isn't the first time this has happened, probably the third time in three years."
