An increased number of vehicles earned top marks for highway safety in 2014, with Asian brands nabbing the most awards.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) puts vehicles through various crash tests to measure how well they protect occupants.

This year, 71 vehicles were included in the organization's annual Top Safety Pick list. Only 39 vehicles made the cut last year.

Toyota had the most vehicles earning a safety award, with 12 winners in all. Honda had the second most award winners, totaling 10.

IIHS is an independent, nonprofit educational organization dedicated to reducing losses from crashes on the nation's roads. Its crash test are judged on a four-step scale: poor, marginal, acceptable and good. The group is supported by auto insurers and insurance associations.
