CHICAGO (WLS) -- Investigators are warning consumers about the latest credit card scam, which involves the security code on the back of each card.
They said it starts with a phone call from scammers pretending to be fraud investigators from the credit card company.
Then callers say there has been fraudulent activity on an account and ask for the three- or four-digit security code on the back, to prove the person they are talking to has the card in their possession.
But investigators said once criminals have that information, they sell it online.
Cardholders should never give out the security code over the phone.
