SPRINGFIELD (WLS) -- All high school students across Illinois will soon have to take a civics course in order to graduate.

Gov. Bruce Rauner signed a new law that will require at least one year of U.S. history.

Schools will also be required to teach American patriotism and proper use of the American flag.

The new graduation requirement goes into effect next school year.
