Events celebrate 30th anniversary of 'Ferris Bueller's Day Off'

CHICAGO (WLS) -- In celebration of the 30th anniversary of "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" hitting theaters, the movie's famous parade scene was recreated Sunday in Chicago's Daley Plaza.

The parade was just one of the many weekend "Ferris Fest" events. The iconic Chicago film was released June 11, 1986.

In the signature parade scene, main character Ferris Bueller - who is ditching school in suburban Chicago with two friends - pretty much takes over the Chicago parade, breaking into song with Wayne Newton's "Danke Schoen" and then leading the crowd in a raucous rendition of the Beatle's "Twist and Shout."

The parade recreation was the highlight of the three-day fest, which included visiting movie locations and meeting some of the actors. The fest also included a screening of the movie hosted by film critic Richard Roeper.

The King High School Band and others who played a prominent role in the movie attended the events, including Edie McClurg, who played the school secretary. She said she can still recite the lines from the movie.

Cindy Pickett and Lyman Ward played Bueller's parents in the movie, and are now married in real life, also joined the festivities.
