Great Chicago Fire Festival debuts on Chicago River
A "first of its kind" event Saturday night, the Great Chicago Fire Festival showcased Chicago?s fiery history along the Chicago River.

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Organizers had promised a big fire display for Chicago's first Great Chicago Fire Festival, but in the end it didn't quite meet expectations.

Crowds were disappointed when the spectacle of fire ended up fizzling on the Chicago River this weekend. Elaborate sculptures of Victorian homes did not go up in flames like they were supposed to.

Organizers blame recent heavy rains for an electrical malfunction.

After several failed attempts, they moved on to the fireworks portion of the show.

"Chicago can't burn a building down but at least they can do a good fireworks show," said Rebecca Strane.

Over 30,000 people turned out for the festival Saturday night.

Despite the glitches, the Redmoon Theater hopes to make this an annual event.
