Kerry Washington uses 'Purple Purse' for domestic violence awareness

CHELSEA -- The issue of domestic violence is now moving far out of the closet.

Among those addressing the issue is the star of ABC's "Scandal" Kerry Washington.

The Emmy-nominated actress launched the "Allstate Foundation's Purple Purse Program" in Chelsea Monday night.

Washington designed the special purse as a symbol of financial freedom for victims of domestic violence.

"The purple purse is really a symbol for the economic strength of a woman to be able to take her purse strings back and take care of herself and her family. So it's really exciting because it's bringing attention around financial abuse," Washington said.

Washington says 98% of domestic violence victims suffer financial abuse, which includes controlling finances, making it difficult for a victim to leave an abuser.
