Aurora celebrates the Day of the Dead

AURORA, Ill. (WLS) -- The Day of the Dead is returning to downtown Aurora on Nov. 1.

The festival falls in conjunction with the Mexican festival of Dia de los Muertos, which honors loved ones who have passed. In Aurora, the festival will feature sugar skulls, marigolds, and alters in the tradition of the Mexican holiday.

The event starts on Benton Street and travels to Aurora's new library. Traditional ofrendas, or offerings, placed on altars will be on display at the library from 1-5 p.m. Ofendas, favorite items such as candy, baked goods, fruit, and photos, are placed on makeshift altars to honor the deceased. The library will host the ofrenda display from Nov. 1-7.

Marissa Amoni, with the Aurora Downtown Organization, joined ABC 7 Eyewitness News live from this year's Day of the Dead to talk about all the family fun in store.
