Long lines have been part of the Hot Doug's experience since it opened in 2001, but in its final week the wait has been longer than ever.
Students bring their work to the line to use their waiting time wisely.
Owner Doug Sohn has had to cut the line off soon after opening because of how long it has grown.
The line stretches past the commercial buildings and deep into the residential neighborhood.
Customers have commemorated their wait in chalk, like these visitors from San Francisco who waited seven hours for encased meats.
Others have simply left their gratitude: "Thank you for filling my arteries with joy."
Owner Doug Sohn remains behind the counter wearing his signature shirt, which reads "There are no two finer words in the English language than 'encased meats,' my friend."
After a long wait, customers savor their prize: inventive and always-delicious sausages and fries.
Chicago has dozens of hot dog joints, but there's only one Hot Doug's and the shop's namesake has written a book about his first 12 years in the business.
