RIVER FOREST, Ill. (WLS) -- Dozens of volunteers for the Christmas Cheer Foundation were up early Thursday morning delivering meals to families who could use some cheer this holiday season.

They started at Dominican University in River Forest before spreading out to Chicago and 35 suburbs. They delivered meals, books and toys.

In Chicago, St. Sabina Catholic Church served home cooked meals to those who needed a place to celebrate Christmas.

Father Michael Pfleger says many of the church's young people were involved so they could see this is what the holiday is all about.

Catholic Charities had a message for people who are homeless: You are not alone. The agency served the traditional holiday meal to hundreds of men, women and children. Chicago Cut Restaurant donated the food.
