October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Women are encouraged to spread the word and schedule a mammography to test for the disease.
While mammography remains the gold standard for breast cancer screening, in women with dense breast tissue, some scans can miss cancer. Now, a new screening method called Automated Whole Breast Ultrasound (ABUS) is being offered and has success in identifying cancers that traditional mammography is missing.
Dr. Catherine Pesce, the Director of the Breast Surgical Program at NorthShore University HealthSystem , and Breast Cancer survivor Patti Beyer, sat down with ABC 7 to talk about the importance of early detection for the disease.
