ABC7 Jim Gibbons 5K just 1 week away

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Runners, get ready. The ABC7 Jim Gibbons 5K race is one week away.

The 5K run and 3K walk winds through Chicago's Lincoln Park on the North Side of the city on Thursday, June 12. The race begins at 6:25 p.m. (LIVE on ABC7 Eyewitness News) near Diversey Harbor, 2601 North Cannon Drive.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the race, which honors longtime ABC7 News Reporter Jim Gibbons, who died of leukemia in 1994. Proceeds from the event benefit the Leukemia Research Foundation (LRF).

"I doubt there's a race that's more personal to me than the Jim Gibbons 5k. As a native Chicagoan, I grew up watching Jim Gibbons as part of the 'Eyewitness News' team. I was familiar with him and his work. But it wasn't until I began working in the business, and eventually here at the station he was with for so many years, that I began to appreciate his legacy," Garcia wrote.
