Man creates night surf board equipped w/ LEDs
A local man has created a surf board equipped with LED lights designed to illuminate waves in the dark.

MALIBU, Calif. -- Night skiing is offered at Snow Summit and Boreal Mountain Resort in Northern California, but a local man has something fun to do in the dark at the beach.

Sean Johnson is getting ready for a nighttime surf session. He doesn't have a full moon to light the ocean, but he doesn't really need the help.

He's on the "Night Rider," a surfboard with LED lights inside that illuminate the waves he catches. Sean's father, Roy Johnson, has shaped the idea into a reality.

"When I was a little kid, we'd go night surfing and bring glow sticks, and that was just so we wouldn't run each other over," Sean said. "Now the fact that we're all gonna be on boards like this would be amazing, it's going to open up a whole new world."

Roy made the first Night Rider with lights you control with a remote. The Night Rider 2 has an on-and-off button. Roy puts the lighting in the foam and seals it with a special compound before glassing the board.

The boards are already getting the attention of other surfers. Juan Hernandez paddled out with Sean to test out the Night Rider for himself.

"You can definitely see the full wave a little better around you, for sure, and then obviously you can see your buddy coming down the line," Hernandez said. "It just makes it that much more fun, I don't know what it is, maybe there's a novelty to it, but it definitely was a little more fun than normal."

The Johnson's hope to share the stoke and believe the possibilities are endless.

"You can even have night surfing parties," Sean said.
