CHICAGO (WLS) -- Chicago police say two people were shot, one of them fatally, in Chicago's South Shore neighborhood Tuesday afternoon.

Police said the two people appear to have been shot at East 75th Street between South Yates Boulevard and South Phillips Avenue around 3:30 p.m. The area is blocked off by police.

The man killed has not been identified, but police said he is a 42-year-old man.

A 27-year-old man suffered a graze wound to the back, and was taken to Jackson Park Hospital, where his condition was stabilized, police said.

Police said the shooting did not appear to be gang-related. A large group of people have gathered at the scene. One neighbor said the victim was a man who had lived in the neighborhood his entire life.

"He's helped out with our community organization personally. We do a lot of giving back to the community, we feed the homeless and he's helped out with some of our events, with the Christmas and Thanksgiving giveaways," said AJ Jackson.

"Just hurt. I'm sad. Painful for my community, painful for his family that here we have another life that's lost to gun violence, senseless gun violence, and I really don't have an explanation of why," Jackson added.

Both shootings took place near a day care facility. Day care officials said everyone there is safe and secure.

Details surrounding the circumstances of the shooting were not immediately clear. Chicago police are investigating.
