One injured in River North shooting

CHICAGO (WLS) -- A 24-year-old man was shot in the abdomen and seriously injured Tuesday in a shooting in River North.

Chicago police say the shooting occurred around 2:30 p.m. in the 600-block of North Wells. The victim was transported to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in serious condition and is expected to recover. Witnesses say they heard at least half a dozen shots.

Video obtained exclusively by ABC7 Eyewitness News shows what appears to be the alleged shooter wearing a hoodie and walking south on Wells. One witness said the man had been pacing the block for hours.

The shooting was not captured by cameras, but the commotion afterward was. Witnesses say the victim was shot while walking on the sidewalk. Before paramedics arrived, the victim received help from people on the street including one man who says he's in the Air National Guard and has EMT training. He says the victim was conscious and talking.

"Just did the basic things that you've been taught," said Daniel Masakowski. "Lift his legs, take pressure off his wounds, keep him conscious, keep him breathing. Make sure he stays with you until proper support arrives."

The shooting took place just steps from popular River North restaurants, as well as the office of Alderman Brendan Riley. Ald. Riley released a statement saying in part, "...it appears the victim was specifically targeted. Allegedly the shooter and victim knew one another and the shooter had been in the area waiting for his victim to exit a nearby restaurant."

Police say the alleged gunman fled in a grey minivan. No one is in custody at this time.
