EVANSTON, Ill. (WLS) -- Two Northwestern students are charged with spray painting the chapel at Northwestern University with offensive graffiti, police said.
Anthony Morales, 19, and Matthew Kafker, 18, are accused of vandalism in the Alice Millar Chapel on Thursday night, police said. The men spray painted on the walls, offices and the chapel's organ.
Northwestern President Morton Schapiro condemned the graffiti, calling it racist, anti-Semitic and homophobic.
Schapiro said in a statement: "This disgusting act of hatred violates the deepest values and core commitments of our University and is an affront to us all."
In a statement to the Northwestern community, officials said the students have been placed on interim suspension, which prohibits them from being on campus at this time.
The two appeared in court and have been released on $50,000 bond.
