2.9-magnitude earthquake hits near Lake in the Hills, USGS says

LAKE IN THE HILLS, Ill. (WLS) -- A small earthquake rocked northwest suburban Lake in the Hills on Wednesday night.

The earthquake happened at 6:08 p.m. local time and measured 2.9 on the Richter scale, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. It was centered about two kilometers west of Lake in the Hills.

Residents reported feeling the quake in parts of Crystal Lake, Lake in the Hills, Huntley, Union Woodstock, Wonder Lake and as far away as Elgin, according to the USGS.

"There was a very loud, thunderous boom. It was short, and there was no flash of lightning, but the house shook," said Ruth, a resident of unincorporated Crystal Lake.

"The whole house was shaking. It was a short, brief period of time," said Carol Letner, of Lake in the Hills. "It really felt like a car had crashed into our house."

Most earthquakes with a magnitude between 2.0 and 3.0 do not typically cause damage, according to the USGS.

No injuries were reported.
