3-year-old boy critically injured in Woodlawn shooting

CHICAGO (WLS) -- A 3-year-old boy was critically injured in a shooting in Chicago's Woodlawn neighborhood on Father's Day. He was sitting next to his dad when someone opened fire on their minivan.

Devon Quinn and his father were on their way to pick up his mother from work around 6:15 p.m. Sunday, when police said another vehicle pulled up next to them in the 6100-block of South Kimbark Avenue and someone inside fired several shots.

The child suffered a gunshot wound to his right shoulder. He was rushed to Comer Children's Hospital, where he remains in critical condition.

Police said Devon was not the intended target.

His family said he underwent surgery Sunday night. Relatives have been praying at the hospital for his recovery. His mother said she's just trying to cope and pray.

Rhonda Willis, who lives near the scene of the shooting, and community activists like Andrew Holmes, said anyone with information must come forward.

"We keep praying for that child. But what is most important, what we need, is that shooter and that car. Anyone know anything, they can give us call," Holmes said.

"Speak out. Too many of our children here in the city of Chicago are being gunned down. A lot of our children are not able to grow up," Willis said.

Neighbors said Monday morning they are scared for their own children.

"It don't make no sense because I have a 1-year-old and the violence has been very crazy around here lately, and it's very scary for me to have my two young kids coming in and out of my house," said Latrice Norvell, a neighbor.

A Chicago police spokesperson said 12 people were shot and killed this weekend and more than 50 have been wounded.

No one is in custody.
