4 killed, 29 shot in Chicago since Friday

CHICAGO -- Four people have been killed and 29 people have been hurt in shootings since Friday.

The most recent homicide happened Saturday night in the South Side Englewood neighborhood.

A 26-year-old man was walking in the 7000 block of South Carpenter about 7:40 p.m. when two gunmen walked out of a gangway and opened fire, shooting him in the abdomen, police said.

He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he later died, police said. The medical examiner's office did not immediately confirm the death.

Earlier Saturday, two men were gunned down within hours of each other on the South Side.

About 3 a.m., officers responding to a call of a person shot found 35-year-old Michael Wickliffe with multiple gunshot wounds in a yard in the 7900 block of South Ellis in the Chatham neighborhood.

Wickliffe, of the 15700 block of Vine Avenue in Harvey, was taken to Jackson Park Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 3:22 a.m., authorities said.

About 12:20 a.m., 30-year-old Semial Sigle was in the first block of West Garfield in the Washington Park neighborhood, when he got into a fight with two other people and one of them shot him in the chest.

Sigle, who lived in the 1800 block of South Wolcott, was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 12:45 a.m., authorities said.

The latest wave of violence saw seven people wounded in about less than five hours overnight Sunday.

The most recent nonfatal shooting happened about 4:30 a.m. in another West Garfield Park attack.

A 25-year-old woman was standing outside in the 4100 block of West Adams when a male walked up and opened fire, police said. She was shot in the abdomen and right arm and later walked into Saint Anthony Hospital, where her condition was stabilized.

About 2:45 a.m., three men were shot in the West Side Austin neighborhood. The men, ages 20, 35 and 36, were standing on a corner in the 5100 block of West Madison about 2:45 a.m. when shots rang out and they were all struck, police said. The 20-year-old suffered a gunshot wounds to the right foot and was taken to West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park, while the 35-year-old was shot in the right elbow and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital. The oldest man suffered gunshot wounds to both legs and was taken to Stroger Hospital. All three men had their conditions stabilized.

Five minutes earlier, two people were shot in the North Lawndale neighborhood on the West Side. The 27-year-old man and 37-year-old woman were sitting in a vehicle in the 3900 block of West Grenshaw about 2:40 a.m. when a male walked up and fired shots, police said. The man was shot in the face, while the woman suffered gunshot wounds to the right thigh and left buttocks. They were both taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where their conditions were stabilized.

About 11:50 p.m. Saturday, a 27-year-old man was injured in a separate Austin neighborhood shooting. He was walking in an alley in the 500 block of South Cicero when two people got out of a vehicle nearby and opened fire, police said. The man suffered gunshot wounds to both legs and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where his condition was stabilized.

The violence continues as family and friends mourn the loss of 49-year-old Yvonne Nelson, who was shot and killed by gang crossfire.

Nelson, a 311 operator, was walking out of a nearby Starbucks and heading home on Friday when she was shot in the chest.

She was honored at a peace gathering Saturday.

"It's a personal thing for us now, that's one of our own. You know, we take all shootings in Chicago seriously but this one touches deep because we knew this particular individual," said Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson.

Hundreds of people wearing red t-shirts gathered to form a two-mile line along 79th Street. The red t-shirts serve as a symbol of the blood of Chicago's innocent victims.

At least 21 more people have been wounded in other shootings since 7 p.m. Friday.
