Scott Peters held on $1M bond in McHenry Co. shooting that injured 2 deputies

WOODSTOCK, Ill. (WLS) -- Scott Peters, the alleged gunman accused of shooting 2 McHenry County sheriff's deputies, is being held on $1 million bond after he appeared in court Friday.

Peters, a 52-year-old military veteran, is charged with attempted murder and aggravated battery/discharge of a firearm in connection with the shooting of two McHenry County sheriff's deputies.

Peters limped into the McHenry County courtroom in Woodstock, Ill., on Friday morning, the day after he allegedly opened fire on three officers who were conducting a well-being check at a Holiday Hills home. Two deputies were shot, the third returned fire.

Peters disappeared after the shooting, sparking a massive manhunt until he was arrested 15 hours later in Crystal Lake.

Sheriff's Deputy Khalia Satkiewicz, 39, is in good condition after sustaining gunshot wounds to the leg. Sheriff's Deputy Dwight Maness, 46, was shot in the abdomen and the leg but is in stable condition.

In court Friday, prosecutors said Peters used an assault rifle, possibly an AR-15, in the shooting.

On Friday afternoon, McHenry County authorities said that they have found a bulletproof vest, a helmet and a rifle in a body of water in the neighborhood where Peters lives. Authorities said they were able to link the weapon to Peters, despite the fact that he does not have a valid FOID card or concealed carry license in Illinois. Authorities said their investigation is ongoing and more charges could be filed.

Peters' military records show that while he was in the military, he went AWOL twice - once in 1981, and again in 1982.

He faces a max of 160 years in prison on the attempted murder charges alone. He is scheduled to be arraigned on October 21.
