Attorney: Tommy Schaefer did not confess to Bali murder

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Tom Durkin, attorney for Tommy Schaefer, says his client did not confess to the murder of Sheila Von Wiese Mack in Bali last week.

The Associated Press reported on Friday, Sept. 19, that Indonesian police chief Col. Djoko Heru Utomo said Schaefer confessed to the murder and that his girlfriend, Von Wiese Mack's daughter Heather Mack, acknowledged helping him hide the body in a suitcase.

Durkin would not answer any further questions or provide any further information other than his assertion that Schaefer did not confess.

Schaefer, 21, and Mack, 19, were arrested in Bali on Aug. 13, one day after Sheila Von Wiese Mack's body was found in a suitcase in a trunk of a taxi at the St. Regis Bali Resort. Mack is three months pregnant.

Mack's attorney, Vanessa Favia, also released a statement saying that Mack's unborn baby is in good health and that Mack is set to have routine doctor visits going forward.

Neither Schaefer nor Mack have been formally charged with a crime.
