SOUTH CHICAGO HEIGHTS, Ill. (WLS) -- A 14-year-old boy is accused of fatally stabbing his older brother as they got ready for school in South Chicago Heights.
"The mother went downstairs to try to break it up. The victim, I guess, engaged the mother into the altercation when his brother then stabbed him," South Chicago Heights Police Chief William Joyce said.
Paramedics were called to the home in the 100-block of West 29th Street shortly after 7 a.m. Wednesday.
"They observed the victim's sister attempting to give CPR while she was on the phone with the dispatch giving instructions," Chief Joyce said.
The 16-year-old victim had been stabbed once in the back with a kitchen knife. He died later at the hospital.
The younger brother fled the scene, but returned later with his grandfather. He was then taken into custody.
Neighbors said the family was new to the block in the last few months.
"It's sad. They're so young. It shouldn't have happened. It's the saddest thing you know," Matt Rogers said.
Police said they have been called to the home in the past, but did not release any information. The Illinois State Police are helping in the investigation.
