Chicago police officer shot in Little Village

CHICAGO (WLS) -- A Chicago police officer is hospitalized after he was shot in the shoulder during a chase Monday. Instead of firing back, his partner used a Taser to take down the suspect.

"He pitched a pistol, looks like I've been shot in the left shoulder," the injured officer said in a calm call for help over the radio.

Police said one officer was shot in the shoulder and another suffered a cut Monday afternoon near 24th and Trumbull in the Little Village neighborhood.

"They were on routine patrol, uniformed officers in a marked car. And they saw three subjects who looked suspicious. They thought they may have seen a weapon," said Chicago Police Supt. Eddie Johnson.

When officers approached the subjects, one of them broke away and ran, Johnson said. The officers were giving chase when the suspect turned around and fired.

"I was making my daughter something when I heard like 15 shots," resident Mike McCampbell said.

Supt. Johnson rushed to Stroger Hospital, where he described restraint from beat officers facing a deadly situation.

"This is a perfect example of doing the right thing. The offender was taken into custody by the officer's partner. He was Tased and not shot. The weapon was recovered," Supt. Johnson said.

The partner was stabbed, and two other men got away.

After a violent weekend in Chicago in which 6 people were killed and 38 wounded, the violence continued Monday; at least six people have been shot, with one person dead.

"We really have to do something about the weapons out here on the street," Supt. Johnson said.

Police said one offender is in custody. Two others are still on the loose.
