Chicago State University supporters rally to save school

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Students and supporters are gathering on the South Side to save Chicago State University. The school is running low on funds and is struggling to keep its doors open because of the state budget crisis.

WGCI will broadcast live from Chicago State until 10 a.m. Friday, hoping to drum up support. Last weekend, hundreds of teachers, students and community leaders gathered at Operation Rainbow Push.

The institution is reeling from a lack of money coming from Springfield. CSU has sent notices to its 900 employees, saying there will be layoffs if the school doesn't receive its state funding.

107.5 WGCI and Inspiration 1390 want to send a message to lawmakers.

"Get it together. Figure it out. Keep this school here on the South Side of Chicago. We need it. Especially at this point in time right now, with everything that's going on in the city. This is one of the few places that's a safe zone, where people can come learn, get educated and give back to their community. Stop valuing the dollar over education," said Leon Rogers, WGCI radio host.

Meanwhile, Reverend Jesse Jackson has called for a "massive day of resistance" Friday to support the effort. He said people need to fight back and march downtown. ABC7 Eyewitness News reached out to him to find out a time and meeting place.
