CPD officer pinned by vehicle shoots offender on West Side

CHICAGO (WLS) -- A Chicago police officer shot the driver of a vehicle who pinned him against another vehicle Wednesday morning on the city's West Side, officials said.

The officer sustained "severe damage to right leg," a police spokesman said. His leg may be broken. The officer has been with CPD for four years.

The offender, who was taken into custody, was shot "multiple times" and in "serious but stable condition" Wednesday afternoon, according to police. Another officer sustained non-life-threatening injuries and expected to be OK.

The police-involved shooting occurred at about 11:15 a.m. in the 1600-block of North Leclaire Avenue after officers saw the man in a stolen vehicle.

Officers, who were in an unmarked vehicle, stopped the vehicle and approached him, but the suspect took off into an alley where he hit another vehicle traveling through the alley.

As officers approached, the suspect continued to ram his vehicle to try and escape.

"The officers, along with another unit, comes and get out of the vehicle to approach the individual giving him verbal commands," said CPD Deputy Chief Al Nagode.

The injured officer was pinned between the offender's vehicle and the other vehicle, police said.

The city's Independent Police Review Authority will investigate. The officers involved will be placed on routine administrative duties for 30 days.

The officers involved were not wearing body cameras.
