CHICAGO (WLS) -- Chicago Public Schools has laid off over 1,100 staff members and teachers, officials announced Thursday.

Officials said the layoff affects 550 teachers due to declining enrollment at certain schools. The layoff will also impact 600 non-teacher staff members.

However, due to vacancies elsewhere, CPS expects to have approximately 1,780 teaching positions vacant for next school year, which impacted teachers can re-apply for within the system, officials said.

The union says about 60 percent of the laid-off teachers are usually able to find other jobs in the system.

Other layoffs include clerks, assistant teachers and security guards.
