CRYSTAL LAKE, Ill. (WLS) -- A Crystal Lake police officer shot a man who charged him with a knife, authorities said, after a domestic situation.
Police were called to a home in the 300-block of West Terra Cotta Avenue around 11 p.m. Sunday, officials said. A woman said she had been beaten by a family member, who had then left the home. The suspect also allegedly threatened a second family member with a knife.
Around 1:35 a.m. Monday, police were called to a home in the 800-block of Boxwood Drive after reports that the same armed man was there, as was the woman who initially called police. The suspect allegedly charged at the responding officer with a knife. The officer then shot the man at least once, officials said.
The suspect is under police guard at Centegra Hospital in Woodstock, where he is listed in critical condition.
The police officer was taken to Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington as a precautionary measure. He was released and placed on administrative leave as part of standard procedure.
Illinois State Police are investigating the shooting. Officials have not said what triggered the incident, but neighbors said it's not the first time police have been at the home on Boxwood Drive.
"They moved in two, three years ago and have caused some issues. It's not the first time cops have been there. Probably two, three times last year itself. There has been trouble there, arguments and shouting and things like that. Some fighting breaking out. There seems to be about three or four people that live there," said Pete Voss, a neighbor.
