CHICAGO (WLS) -- The CTA is launching the next major phase of its Brown and Purple Line renovation, which will upgrade the tracks between Armitage and the Merchandise Mart, officials said.
The upgrade, which will cost $40.3 million, will help eliminate slow zones and create a smoother ride for patrons, officials said. Crews from Kiewit Infrastructure will begin the work in spring 2015.
The work will likely include weekend track closures, though details on service impacts will be released by the CTA closer to the start of the project.
CTA crews have already been repairing brackets on tracks to strengthen the elevated structure in the area, referred to as the Ravenswood Connector, officials said. Crews have also made rail tie repairs south of Armitage, which has caused some slow zones in the area that may impact travel times, officials said.
The project, which is part of a larger $71.2 million Brown and Purple Line renovation project, is expected to be complete at the end of 2015.
As part of a separate project, the Brown Line will be suspended between Western and Kimball for track improvements beginning Aug. 16 at 2:40 a.m. and ending at 4 a.m. Aug. 18. A shuttle bus service will be available, though CTA officials are also recommending patrons use the #81 Lawrence bus.
