Suburban video gambling increases

FOX LAKE, Ill. (WLS) -- Despite some initial reluctance when video gambling was legalized in Illinois two years ago, many suburbs have since voted to allow it. And in that time, the move has been a windfall for proprietors and the towns where their businesses reside.

For instance, Fox Lake, with 10,537 people, has taken in more than $240,000 from the $75 million that's been pumped into 107 machines at 23 businesses. The owners we talked to say their take has been better than predicted, with none of the resultant crime and other problems some predicted.

Still, hard-core foes of video gambling remain, such as Mount Prospect Mayor Arlene Juracek, who says video gambling is "a very sad commentary" on the state's prospects for economic viability.
