Driver sought after Cicero hit-and-run critically injures woman, goddaughter

CICERO, Ill. (WLS) -- A woman and her 10-year-old goddaughter were critically injured Sunday around 5:15 p.m. when they were struck by a hit-and-run vehicle while crossing Cermak Road, authorities said.

The vehicle involved is described as a silver, four-door family vehicle, police said. The vehicle sustained damage to the front right and right side and is missing the right headlight and passenger-side mirror, which police said were recovered at the accident scene near the McDonald's.

The victims were able to provide a brief description of the suspect as being male, Hispanic, heavy-set, and bald with "large" facial hair, authorities said.

Cicero police are hoping the public can help identify the vehicle involved and the driver.

The accident occurred when the two victims started to cross Cermak. A vehicle stopped to let them pass, but the suspect apparently gunned his engine to speed up and pass the stopped vehicle, striking the two victims as they crossed the street, police said.

Police said the striking driver immediately sped away after hitting 44-year-old Sonia Castrejon and 10-year-old Lizette Castrejon. Both victims are in critical condition at Mt. Sinai Hospital.
