Mayor Emanuel, Peoples Gas announce $1M for 'Share the Warmth' program

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Mayor Emanuel and Peoples Gas are expected to announce $1 million in funding for "Share the Warmth," a financial assistance program that helps low-income families and seniors.

When customers who qualify for "Share the Warmth" make a payment toward their heating bill, they receive a matching grant of up to $200 that can be used to reconnect service, avoid disconnection and maintain natural gas service.

The mayor's office said the $1 million contribution - $100,000 from the city of Chicago and $900,000 from People's Gas - can provide assistance to 5,000 families.

"We want to help our customers manage their energy costs ahead of winter by offering financial assistance, bill payment options, and rebates which encourage energy efficiency," Peoples Gas President John Kleczynski said. "We encourage customers to prepare for winter and apply early ahead of the first cold snap."

Peoples Gas said customers should bring these documents with them to apply for a grant:

Proof of gross income from all household members for the last 30 days.

Copy of most recent utility bill.

Proof of Social Security Numbers for all household members.

A Medical Eligibility Card for any household member receiving Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF.)
