Family of woman accidentally killed by Chicago police files wrongful death lawsuit

CHICAGO (WLS) -- The family of a 55-year-old grandmother accidentally shot and killed by Chicago police filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the city.

Bettie Jones was fatally shot Dec. 26 by an officer responding to a domestic disturbance call in Chicago's West Garfield Park neighborhood.

Police said the officer opened fire on Quintonio Legrier, 19, as Jones opened the front door of her building. Legrier was allegedly running toward the door when he was shot and killed.

The lawsuit filed Monday in Cook County Circuit Court includes a claim for intentional infliction of emotional distress as a result of the officer's actions. Last week, Legrier's father also filed a lawsuit against the city.

Jones had five children and ten grandchildren. She will be laid to rest Wednesday at New Mount Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church at 4301 West Washington Boulevard. The wake will begin around 10 a.m. Funeral services will start around 11 a.m.
