CHICAGO (WLS) -- The family of Eric Howlett, the pilot killed in a small plane crash near Midway Airport, said he died doing what he loved.
Howlett was at the controls of the twin engine cargo plane when it went down on Chicago's Southwest Side early Monday, shortly after taking off. He reported engine trouble and was trying to return to Midway.
In a statement released Thursday, Howlett's family said the 47-year-old was a longtime flight instructor, a dedicated husband and a proud father of five.
"Eric died living his boyhood dream of being a pilot. He was an optimist and would want us all to look forward with faith and continue to dream. Eric's personal motto was 'life is either a daring adventure or nothing.' His earthly end came as he lived his great adventure."
He also served as a Mormon missionary overseas, was a scoutmaster and was always willing to help.
Howlett is survived by his wife, Christina, their five children, his parents and eight siblings.
