Fight heard before car slams into 2 men in Belmont Heights, witness said

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Two men were taken into custody after a hit-and-run crash critically injured two other men in Belmont Heights.

The hit-and-run victims were standing on the sidewalk at the corner of Ozark and Belmont around 4:15 a.m. Monday when they were struck by a vehicle. That car sped off.

"Around 4:15 a.m. I heard a commotion. Yelling, screaming, fighting. I didn't wake up because it's a common thing here every Saturday morning, Friday morning, Sunday morning. And then I heard a boom. And I realized somebody hit a car or something," Rich Ferati said.

The men, ages 30 and 31, were taken to the hospital. They are in critical and serious condition, respectively.

"I'm on the second window and the guy was laying in front of my window. He seemed like he was out," Ferati said. Tracks in the grass show where the car jumped the curb and slammed into the men.

Ferati also saw a red Lexus speed away.

"I saw it on Belmont. When a person got in the car, they were screaming, 'Get in the car, get in the car.' And they took off," he said.

About half a mile away at Belmont and Osceola, police roped off a car matching that description and transferred two people from inside the vehicle to hospitals.

Police say two people are in custody in connection with the hit-and-run crash, but did not say if those are the same men transferred from the red Lexus at Belmont and Osceola, nor have they officially connected that vehicle to the hit-and-run crash.
