HARVEY, Ill. (WLS) -- A fire destroyed a 74-year-old building that housed a sporting goods store and apartments in south suburban Harvey, where firefighters battled the blaze Thursday for more than five hours.
Firefighters responded to the City Sports store building, located near 154th and Broadway, around 5 p.m. Thursday. The building housed four stores.
Heavy black smoke could be seen for miles.
Harvey spokesperson Sean Howard said the fire started in the basement of the store and went up. Two apartments on the second floor were evacuated and no one was injured, Howard said.
Multiple agencies responded to the scene, including the Chicago Fire Department, which responded with a foam truck. CFD tweeted photos of the blaze.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
The building had recently went up for sale.
