Gary school board votes to close 6 schools

GARY, Ind. (WLS) -- The Gary, Indiana, school board voted Tuesday to close six of its 17 schools.

The Post-Tribune reports the schools to be shuttered are Lew Wallace STEM Academy, Dunbar-Pulaski Middle School, Watson Academy for Boys, Brunswick and Webster elementaries and the Lincoln Achievement Center.

The closings will affect nearly 2,200 students.

The Gary School District faces a $27 million budget deficit.
