Gas prices fall to lowest level since 2009, AAA says

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Gas prices have dropped to their lowest level in years.

The national average price of gas is $1.81 per gallon. In some areas, drivers are paying even less. Gas prices in the U.S. haven't been this cheap since January 2009.

According to AAA, the average price for a gallon of regular gas in the Chicago metro area is $1.75. One year ago, it was $2.29 per gallon.

Gas is a little more expensive within Chicago's city limits. The average is $2.01 per gallon, which is 40 cents cheaper than last year's average of $2.41 per gallon.

Seasonal demand and falling crude oil prices are behind the relief at the pump. Drivers have seen prices drop for some time now. National retail averages have fallen for 70 out of the last 80 days, for a total savings of 40 cents per gallon. The supply of crude oil is outpacing its demand.
