Illinois tornado victims get help from Cubs fans

FAIRDALE, Ill. (WLS) -- With buckets in hand, Cubs employees collected donations from fans to go towards the victims of Thursday's tornado.

From Chicago to Fairdale, donations are pouring in. Cubs fans entering the ballpark Tuesday night donated to make a difference to those that lost everything in Fairdale and Rochelle after the EF-4 tornado.

After news of the devastation the huge tornado left behind spread, the Cubs organization decided to provide buckets for fans to donate money.

"My family, myself, we're just like, devastated over what happened and we just wanted to give them help whatever we can we will give out cause I know they'd do the same thing to us," said Ulises Huerta, who donated money.

Even proceeds from Tuesday night's 50-50 raffle will go towards the victims.

"We were in contact with the Red Cross and they said you know, really what we need right now is money, so that's why we are doing this," said Connie Falcone, Cubs Charities.

And not surprising, fans did not disappoint. Some, even came back to give more than once.

"I just think it would be devastating to lose your home, your belongings," said Jennifer O'Grady, who donated funds.

Gov. Bruce Rauner announced more relief Tuesday for tornado victims. Residents will now have until October 31 to file tax returns that were due on Wednesday.

Those who couldn't make it to Tuesday night's game can still donate at Cubs.com/give through Sunday, April 19.
