Residents wary after burglary at Moncler in Gold Coast

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Residents of Chicago's Gold Coast are unsettled after an estimated thousands of dollars of merchandise was stolen from luxury outwear store Moncler in the early hours of Monday morning.

Officers responded to a burglary alarm around 3:50 a.m. on Monday and found the front door of Moncler, on the 0-100 block of East Oak Street, shattered. Police say thieves rammed a car into the high end retail store and stole several racks of expensive coats. Plywood is put up at the entrance of Moncler in place of the front door that was smashed in.

Police did not have an estimate on the stolen merchandise, but the Moncler website lists some coats for $3,000. The store was closed at the time of the burglary and no one was hurt.

Detectives continued to investigate throughout the day as residents of the neighborhood found out about the smash and grab. Many were unsettled by the news of the burglary.

"The reason we moved to the area with my daughter is that we felt fine with her walking around," said Jyoti Lazzaro, a Gold Coast resident. "I find this worrisome."

Other residents say the Gold Coast is a safe neighborhood and wonder if this incident is related to other smash and grabs in the past couple of years. Back in April of 2013, burglars smashed through the front window of the Yves Saint Laurent boutique in the 0-100-block of East Walton Street, making away with $100,000 in purses and other items. They struck just before 3 a.m., around the same time and Monday morning burglary.

In December of 2012, the Jimmy Choo on Oak Street was also looted. Masked men wearing hooded sweatshirts broke through the glass, taking high-priced designer items in the middle of the night.
