Man, 76, found fatally shot in Far South Side home

CHICAGO (WLS) -- A 76-year-old man was found shot to death in his home Tuesday in the Golden Gate neighborhood on the city's Far South Side, police said.

Darryl Cannon says he found his brother Claude Cannon dead by the back door of the home they shared. He said he came home Monday night and went straight to bed, and didn't discover his brother dead downstairs until Tuesday.

"My brother had already been shot and killed when I came home," Darryl Cannon said.

Claude Cannon had been shot multiple times, including in the head and chest, in his home in the 13000-block of S. Riverdale Avenue.

"To come home and to see your brother laying there with a hole in his head in the fetal position, as if he was praying, I've never seen anything like that before in my life," Darryl Cannon said through tears.

Neighbors reported hearing gunfire during the day Monday, but that's not out of the ordinary in the Chicago neighborhood that borders south suburban Riverdale.

Claude Cannon was a grandfather. He and his brother are part of a close-knit family who has called this community for decades.

"I will still be living in this house. I'm not moving," Darryl Cannon said.

Darryl Cannon is no stranger to difficult times. He is among the men who accused detectives under former Chicago Police Cmdr. Jon Burge of torture. Darryl Cannon spent two decades in prison for a murder he didn't commit. And now, the murder of his brother.

"The same way I had to deal with that and maintain, once again, I have to deal with something that affects me directly," Darryl Cannon said.

Chicago police are releasing few details, other than to say they are investigating. No one is in custody.
