CHICAGO (WLS) -- A 43-year-old man was fatally shot Sunday morning during his birthday party in the city's University Village neighborhood, police said.
Everick Coleman, of Chicago, was shot in the head and chest at about 2:20 a.m. in the 1300-block of West Hastings Street.
At least 200 people were celebrating with him during a block party near South Throop and West Hastings streets. After the shooting, bullet casings were strewn around the ground with abandoned drink cups.
A 40-year-old woman was also wounded and was transported to a hospital in stable condition.
Coleman, known as a sharp-dressed father and grandfather, was known as Blue.
The shooting occurred on the same block where a memorial marks where another murder happened less than two months ago.
Ceola Coleman, the victim's mother, said she knew something was wrong when she got an early morning call.
"I went over there after we left the hospital and I saw blood like in the street," said Jowayn Outlaw, the victim's sister. "It hurt. I had to pull over because I literally had to throw up."
No one is in custody. Police are investigating.
