BROOKFIELD, Ill. (WLS) -- Metra BNSF trains are moving again as of 4:30 p.m. after emergency crews responded to a hazmat situation in Brookfield, Ill.

Metra officials say they're using a "load and go" strategy as they attempt to get back on schedule. Passengers should pay attention to arrival and departure screens so they are ready to board as soon as trains pull in.

Brookfield officials say a passerby called them after spotting plastic bags containing an unknown liquid directly on the train tracks around 9:15 a.m. Hazmat crews from various communities were called in and are still trying to determine what the material is.

"Initial crews responded to the scene and discovered multiple bags of an unknown substance on the tracks," said Capt. Ediwn Bermann of the Brookfield Fire Department. "Because they were not able to positively identify the substance, we called for a hazardous materials box alarm which brought in approximately 15 different towns and fire departments and additional hazardous materials technicians. After a very thorough investigation using multiple meters, we were still unable to determine a positive identification of the product."

Inbound and outbound BNSF trains were halted for hours as crews tested the unknown chemical. Streets in the area are also closed down during the cleanup.
