Mundelein man killed, 5 injured in shootings near U of I campus in Champaign, Ill.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WLS) -- A man was killed and five people injured after two shootings Sunday morning near the University of Illinois campus in Champaign, Ill.

Police responded to a report of shots fired in the 300-block of East Green Street at about 12:38 a.m. Four victims were found at the scene with gunshot wounds and transported to area hospitals, police said.

One of the victims later died, police said. He has been identified as George Korchev, 22, of Mundelein, who police said was walking near the area when the shooting took place. The University of Illinois Police Department said Korchev was not a student at the university.

Three other people sustained non-critical injuries in the shooting. A fifth person who was running from the gunfire was struck by a vehicle on East Green Street and received minor injuries.

Police said the shooting followed an argument that took place at an apartment party. A fight broke out outside the party and shots were fired. Police said none of the shooting victims were involved in the fight.

About 30 minutes after the first shooting, police received another report of shots fired in the 700-block of South State Street. One person was wounded and transported to an area hospital with a non-critical gunshot wound. Police said the shootings may be related.

U of I graduate Kathryn Lawlor posted on Snapchat as one of the shootings occurred.

"It really did startle me, my heart is still racing I haven't gone to sleep since this happened. My video recorded this at 12:40 in the morning and it just feels unreal that this could happen," said Lawlor.

Champaign Mayor Deborah Frank Feinen issued a statement on Sunday:

"On behalf of the City of Champaign, our thoughts and prayers go out to all the victims affected by this morning's shootings. This tragedy, like all the other incidents of gun violence in our community, is unacceptable. The Champaign Police Department, University of Illinois Police Department, and other area law enforcement agencies are working collaboratively to aggressively pursue all leads in this ongoing investigation. During challenging times like these, our community has always stood together, and we will continue to do so. I ask the community to continue to support law enforcement as they pursue all investigative leads."

U of I students announced a vigil for Korchev, it is set to take place Tuesday night.

Advocate Condell Medical Center President Dominica Tallarico released a statement about Korchev Monday morning. He was about to begin work there:

"The Advocate Condell Medical Center family is heartbroken over the loss of George Korchev, a caring young man with a promising career at Condell. A patient care tech who recently passed his Nursing Board Exam, he was to have begun a position as a registered nurse at Advocate Condell today. George was a valuable team member who was loved by his patients and known as a skilled, empathetic and selfless caregiver. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family. Chaplains are available to support our associates during this difficult time."

Korchev attended College of Lake County from 2012 through 2015, earning his Certified Nurse Assisting certificate and his Associate in Applied Science in Nursing.

Police are pursuing all leads in what has become the Champaign's seventh homicide this year.
