Man shot in the head near Millennium Park, person in custody

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Police took a person of interest into custody after a 54-year-old man man was shot in the head on South Michigan Avenue near Millennium Park in downtown Chicago Saturday night.

The shooting occurred near Michigan Avenue and Monroe Street at about 7:30 p.m. The victim, who police identified as Peter Fabbri, was with two women, including his sister. After shooting Fabbri in the head, the suspect fled on a bicycle and the Fabbri's sister tried to chase him down.

"I chased him to the street, he threw one of his children off their bike, I chased him through the street, tried to hold the bike down, his girlfriend comes and punched me and ripped my shirt. I wind up on the ground and another security guard came to help me and call the police, and my brother is on the ground unconscious going to the hospital now," said Shelly Fabbri.

Fabbri was transported to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condition.

Bystanders who were visiting Millennium Park could not believe they witnessed the violent crime in downtown Chicago.

"It's downtown, we're right by the faces, the sculptures. Usually it's a family friendly area you know? This stuff happens either West Side, South Side but it's spreading all over the place, something needs to be done," said Sean Covello.

"It's just crazy. The world is going crazy. Stuff is continuing to happen. We just need to bring hope to the city, hope to America," said Frankie Cortez.

No charges have been filed.
